Roxio Game Capture Product Review

Roxio Game Capture Product

Over the last few months, we’ve been spending some time with Roxio’s new Game Capture device. Targeted at players looking to create their own montages and game play videos, Roxio has put out a product that is both easy to use and affordable. Available for purchase online HERE, the game capture device comes in two ‘flavors.’ One is intended for console gamers, the other for PC gamers. With an MSRP of $99 for console gamers and $49 for PC gamers, players will be hard pressed to find a more affordable option for their video capturing needs.

Gamers can purchase one of two variations.

For the sake of our review, we used the console capture device. Roughly the size of Super Nintendo cartridge, the device is small and unintrusive. Set up is a breeze and the package comes with everything gamers will need. The package includes the actual capture device, a USB connection to hook up to any USB capable PC. It also contains a set up component cables so that gamers can still see their game on tv while capturing video. We did find that after connecting the capture device, the secondary cables gave us a sub par, fuzzy image on our LCD tv. It should also be noted that uploads will only be in 480p, so those expecting high end HD content might want to look elsewhere. The primary focus on Roxio’s end was to provide a source of uploading online content to sites such as Youtube, so the 480p works just fine. One area of concern we had was that while the hookup was extremely easy to understand and execute, the whole set up quickly became a rat’s nest of wires. For those who are particular about their set up and how everything is arranged, this could easy become an issue as there are essentially 4 sets of wires where their used to be 2.

Set up is a breeze.

The video editing software included with the package is very intuitive and easy to use. While no one will ever mistake it for profession software like Pinnacle or Final Cut, for amateur or casual users it’s just fine. The ability to add text overlays to videos, cut and paste segments, or add extra graphics proves to be all we really needed. Experienced users will find enough here to make professional looking videos with ease while amateurs will have no problem making serviceable videos that anyone would be pleased with.

Overall, we highly recommend the Roxio Game Capture device. We’ve recently launched our own podcast and plan on utilizing the product in these podcasts in the future, to bring gamers tips and share trailers, etc with everyone. The ease of use makes it a no brainer for us and for those looking for similar functionality, give Roxio’s product a serious amount of consideration. Shown below is a demo of a Call of Duty Black Ops session that was edited and produced using the Game Capture device for those who would like to see the product in action.

Overall Rating 8/10
