Underdog Game of the Week: Ghostbusters

underdog

Today’s Underdog Game of the Week, is another relatively newer title.  Ghostbusters, for PS3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii.  This was a really great, and well made game, something you don’t see very often with movie based titles.  Written by Dan Akyroyd, and Harold Ramis themselves, this game truly captured the classic Ghostbusters feel that so many of us grew up loving.  The entire original cast is there, right down to Janine.  The only really big member of the cast absent is Rick Morranis, in his role of Louis Tully.  That’s ok though, because William Atherton even makes an appearance, reprising his role of Walter Peck.  This game was funny, had a classic Ghostbusters story, and was flat out a real treat to play.

A supernatural version of Gears of War meets Rapala Fishing, players take on the role of the new rookie Ghostbuster.  Using the classic proton pack, and some new  gadgets and gizmos invented by Egon, you’ll take on ghosts, both new and old.  Angry bellhops, book golems, even Slimer and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man!  A few levels here and there felt a little out of place, but for the most part, this was really a very creative and gripping game.  At some points, it was even down right creepy!  While the PC, 360, and PS3 version went for a more realistic appearance, the Wii version adopted a more cartoonish style.  The characters appeared as a cross between the real actors, and the Real Ghostbusters TV series characters.  While not as dark, or real in tone, this one was still fun on the Wii.  Using your Wii remote as your proton wand, you can slam ghosts into walls, and throw your trap out with the nunchuck.  The campaign, while keeping the same story, had very different levels, and bosses from it’s 360, and Ps3 counterparts.  If you have the opportunity to, we actually encourage playing both, as they both offer their own unique gameplay, and style.

Unfortunately this game didn’t sell as well as it could have, and many people let it pass by.  The multiplayer was a little lackluster, so it didn’t have much replay-ability,  but for its low price point of $17.99 through Amazon, it’s a great bargain.  Whether your a fan of the franchise or not, it’s a title we highly recommend, and urge you to consider!  Until next week, enjoy, and happy gaming!
